The Department of Physical Education and Sports Sciences (PESS) at National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) traces its origins back to 1946, when the four-year Physical Education Program was established at the then Taiwan Provincial Normal College, becoming the first program in Taiwan dedicated to training physical education teachers. In 1948, it was reorganized as the Department of Physical Education. By 1954, the department expanded into the Department of Physical and Health Education, comprising two divisions, Physical Education and Health Education, beginning the simultaneous training of professionals in both fields.
In 1959, the Physical Education division was renamed the Department of Physical Education, and in 1965 it officially began admitting students. Outstanding athletes were also granted admission through a special recommendation system, providing opportunities for further development. In 1970, the department established Taiwan’s first master’s program in physical education, followed by the country’s first doctoral program in 1990, marking a new milestone in cultivating the highest-level academic professionals in the field of physical education and sports in Taiwan.
In 2001, the College of Sport and Recreation was established, comprising the Department of Physical Education, the Graduate Institute of Sport and Recreation Management (now the Graduate Institute of Sport, Leisure, and Hospitality Management), and the newly established Department of Competitive Sports. From that point on, the Department of Physical Education was transferred from the College of Education to the College of Sport and Recreation.
As NTNU evolved from a teacher-training institution into a comprehensive university, the department has continued its mission of training physical education teachers while actively expanding into diverse fields such as sports sciences research, administration, and industry development. In response to international academic consensus and to highlight its interdisciplinary integration and multifaceted development, the department was officially renamed the Department of Physical Education and Sports Sciences in 2021 (Chinese-language name updated in 2021; English name updated in 2025). The new name reflects both the department’s tradition in teacher education and its focus on the humanities and natural sciences within sport and exercise sciences, better aligning with its domestic and international development and fostering the broad professional development of its students.
For over seventy years, the department has established a solid foundation for the development of physical education and sports as well as PE teacher training in Taiwan. Its mission is to promote the dissemination, advancement, and application of knowledge in physical education and sports through teaching, research, and service, while continuously cultivating diverse talents who demonstrate both professional competence and leadership skills.
